«Military heroism of the past»
Reconstruction of arming of the 13th -17th centuries
The exhibition “Military heroism of the past” will be opened in the Vologda Tower of the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve from June 3 till the end of summer.
Visitors will see the chain-mails and arms of Alexander Nevsky’s body-guards and of Teutonic Knights, the arming of Mongolian and Russian warriors of the Battle of Kulikovo. The complexes of the arming of a Russian boyar and of an European knight will tell about the time of Ivan the Terrible and Livonian wars of the 16th century.
The reconstructions of old defensive arms are unique. They were made on the model of archaeological finds and exhibits from the State Historical Museum, the State Armory, the State Hermitage Museum, the Museum of Kulikovo Field and European Museums. These object were used in the military-historical festivals.
Some chain-mails and arms were reconstructed in accordance with historical sources such as miniatures, icons, chronicles. F.ex. the masters from Tula made the helmet “Bukovitsa” that hasn’t archaeological analogs. Its reconstruction is based on the Novgorod Psalter of the 14th century.
