The commemoration day of Great-Martyr Theodore Stratelates – the patron saint of the Orthodox warrior-host – is celebrated on February 21. A feat of arms for the good of the native country was considered to be the highest form of Christian service in the Orthodox countries. The first warriors-martyrs who suffered for their faith set an example of such service: Saints Boris and Gleb, Saint George, Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, Saint John the Warrior, Saint Theodore Stratelates, Saint Alexander Nevsky.
