The exhibition titled “Der Heilige Nikolaus - Geheimnisvolles, Erdichtetes und Wahres (St. Nicholas – Mystery, Fiction, Truth)” was opened in the National Museum of Liechtenstein the other day. It presents reproductions of icons and other depictions of St. Nicholas from the holdings of the largest museums of the region – the Vologda and the Veliky Ustiug Museum-Preserves, the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes and the Totma Museum Association.
This display is being staged in Vaduz, the capital of this European country. It is one of the official events marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Liechtenstein. Members of the Liechtenstein Government, representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, employees of the Russian Embassy in Switzerland, Russian countrymen living in Liechtenstein attended the opening ceremony.
Close cooperation of the National Museum of Liechtenstein and the Department of Culture, Tourism and Cultural Heritage Preservation in the Vologda region began in summer 2014 when the stamps of Liechtenstein were displayed in the Modern Art Gallery “Red Bridge” in Vologda. Konstantin Nefedov, Consul of the Russian Federation in Switzerland, and Rainer Vollkommer, director of the National Museum of Liechtenstein, came to Kirillov and Ferapontovo in August 2014. During the visit, they agreed on the participation of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve in the project about St. Nicholas.
Then the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes gave four photographs of the icons painted in the 15th-16th centuries and a photo of the fresco in the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral to the National Museum of Liechtenstein.
The photos of the icons from the holdings of the museums in the Vologda region were included in the catalogue “St. Nicholas the Miracle-Worker. Life of St. Nicholas” in German and in the booklet “St. Nicholas – Mystery, Fiction, Truth” in Russian and German. They were published by the National Museum of Liechtenstein on the occasion of the exhibition opening. People will be able to see this display till January 11, 2015.
