History of the region based on the materials of archeological excavations” is being opened on the lowest floor of the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple with the refectory. It is the first full exhibition representing archaeology of the Belozersk district in the Vologda Region. Materials of the monastery archeology are displayed for the first time in our region. More than 4000 archeological objects dating back to different chronological periods are represented there: from the Mesolithic period (9000 B.C.) till the late Middle Ages.
At the end of the 20th – early 21st century considerable restoration work has been carried out in the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. Museumfication of the monuments is being realized at the same time. One of the most interesting architectural buildings of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery is the Monks’ cells. In the process of its restoration architects and restorers managed to discover complicated structure of this dwelling house of the 17th-19th centuries.
Exhibitions dedicated to the folk applied art and handicrafts of the Belozersk district are placed in the spacious vaulted chambers of the monastery cook-house of the 16th century. An important place is occupied by wood-carving, ceramics, peasant embroidery, weaving, lace-making and a folk female costume of the 19th-early 20th centuries.

The Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes continues introducing Russian artists of the 20th century to visitors. The exhibition “Frescoes of Free Air” of Russia’s Honoured Artist V.I. Pavlov was opened in the Treasury Chamber on October 7. The master came to Ferapontovo many times. Vyacheslav Pavlov considered that the frescoes of Dionisy in the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral served as a basis for a series of works “Frescoes of Free Air”. The display presents the tapestry made by A.A. Shmakova according to the artist’s drawing.

Vyacheslav Pavlov told the following about his works: “Like the world, they go from afar, from the feelings of the frescoes in Ferapontovo that I painted in autumn 1983 and the world of which changed considerably and was populated by new quite independent characters within more than 10 years. I got a new feeling of space here – the feeling of horizon, this reference point of the human perception of space. It is a measure of eternity for an earthly look of the artist. Even the abyss can be estimated from the horizon moving the sky and firmament. It is the perception of the upright person. Besides, these are my evangelical feelings that are not connected with canonical interpretation of the subject, but are phantoms of free imagination of a clear and laconic form. The space of desert or conventional horizon appeared on reading the “Life of St. Mary of Egypt”. It is the life of desert or the life of wasteland. Angels, St. John the Baptist settled there. Sometimes centaurs came from the other pagan world. The flying Angels seemed to echo naked women and terrible griffins”.

“Frescoes of Free Air” is the first one-man exhibition of Vyacheslav Pavlov in the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes and the second one in the Vologda region. It will be open till November 30.
