Mikhail Sharomazov was appointed director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve five years ago (on October 1, 2009). You can find information about the most important events that have taken place in the museum within the last years below.
Mikhail Sharomazov
Mikhail Sharomazov was born on August 28, 1985. He graduated from St. Petersburg Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin in 1990 with a degree in theory and history of art. He has been working in the museum for 27 years while his total seniority is 40 years.
Mikhail Sharomazov began to work in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve as a research officer of the Old Russian Painting Department on September 1, 1987. He was appointed head of the Exposition and Exhibition Department in the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes in 1996 and director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve on October 1, 2009.

Exposition and exhibition work
Expansion of the exhibition areas: the Museum of Town and District History was opened in 2010. It is located in the building that belonged to the district doctor J.Y. Nodelman at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries. The house of the Tserkovnitskys was handed over to the museum in 2013.
About 80 exhibitions are staged in the museum (including its branch - the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes) every year. Only 22 among them are permanent expositions, the rest are temporary displays. The exhibition work is aimed at the reception of organized tourist groups on the one hand and at the attraction of local population to the museum on another one.
2010 – Participation in the exhibition “Holy Russia” in the Louvre, Paris.
2012 – The exhibition “Iconostasis of the Dormition Cathedral of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery” in the Moscow Kremlin Museums. This project was among ten best displays of medieval art in the world (93 thousand visitors).
The exhibition “Icons Painted by the Masters of the Tsar's Court in the 17th century” presenting the works of art from the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums was held in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve.
2013 – Participation in the exhibition “Grand Prince of all Rus Ivan III” in the Moscow Kremlin Museums.
2014 – Opening of new permanent expositions “History of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery” and “Craft and Masterpieces”.
The restored Dormition (Assumption) Cathedral was opened for visitors – both for organized groups and individual tourists - for the first time within many years.
Storage, preservation of monuments
Over 8000 articles have replenished the museum holdings over the last five years.
2009 - The automated control system of temperature and humidity conditions in the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral was installed in the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes. It gave a chance to improve monitoring of the temperature and humidity conditions and to considerably increase the capacity of the church.
2013-2014 - The most up-to-date wireless control system of temperature and humidity conditions “Wi-climate™” was installed in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve. At present it is used in six main monuments and expositions of the museum.
Restoration
In 2010, restoration of the wooden Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (1485) was completed and the wooden chapel from the Pasynkovo village (the Kirillov district) was transported to the museum complex “Tsypino” (in the outskirts of Ferapontovo).
In 2011, conservation of the Dionisy’s frescoes (1502) in the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral of the Ferapontov Monastery was completed. The state of the painting has been annually monitored in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Culture since 2012.
The ventilation and air conditioning system was installed in the House of the Father Superior of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery in 2011. A part of the rooms located on the ground floor of the New Town fortifications between the Kazan and the Vologda Towers was restored.
The central complex of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery (the Dormition Cathedral with the side-churches) was restored from 2010 to 2014. Site improvement of the central square in the monastery was carried out in 2014.
The museum started full-scale work on restoration of the painting in the Dormition Cathedral: the painting in the 17th-century drum was restored in 2011-2012; the 17th-century painting of the altar part and the lowest tier of the 19th-century oil painting in the western annex were restored in 2013.
Unique restoration of the original gilded iconostasis of the 18th-century in the Dormition Cathedral was carried out in 2012-2013.
Restoration of the Church of St. Martinian and site improvement of the Ferapontov Monastery was carried out in 2013-2014.
In 2013, the museum specialists restored the façades of the Treasury Chamber and the drying room of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. They are completing restoring the façades of the Bell-Tower and the stone walls along the main alley of the ensemble in Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. They also restored the façades of the Churches of Epiphany and St. Ferapont, the Holy Gate and the Treasury Chamber of the Ferapontov Monastery and the interior of the Church of St. Martinian in Ferapontovo in 2013.
Restoration of the following monuments began in 2014: the Kazan Tower (1658-1659), the Dwelling Cells with closets (prison), the Trinity Gate (1663-1667), the Church of Transfiguration (1595) and the rooms in the walls of the New Town fortifications between the Kazan and the Vologda Towers.
Besides, they elaborated design documentation for restoration of the monuments in the ensembles of the Kirillo-Belozersky and the Ferapontov Monasteries and for reconstruction of the historical buildings in the Tsypino village.
Archeological excavations are annually carried out on the grounds of the Kirillo-Belozersky and the Ferapontov Monasteries and in the museum complex “Tsypino”.
Mass cultural events
The museum takes an active part in the annual international action “Night at the Museum” every year.
2012-2013 - such events as the Festival of Historical Reenactment “Character of the North”, the Art Festival “The Property of Republic”, the Theatricalized Festival “Illusions of Old Village”, the Ilyinsky Festival, the honey fair were held and became traditional.
2013 - The Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and its branch - the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes – joined in the All-Russian action “Night of Arts”.
2014 - The Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve first hosted the International Theatrical Festival “Voices of History”. The International Festival of Traditional American Music was held in the museum complex “Tsypino”.
Information projects
The museum website kirmuseum.ru and pages in the leading social networking sites started to play a bigger role in dissemination of information.
2012 – The virtual tour of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was placed on the museum website.
2014 – Participation in the First Internet Festival of Museum Multimedia “Museum Geek”. A special prize of the organizer – the State Museum of History of Religion (St. Petersburg) – was given to the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve.
Awards
2010 - The museum became the laureate in the nomination “For the contribution to the preservation of the cultural heritage of Russia” of the All-Russian Contest “Golden Mercury” organized by the RF Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The museum received the diploma of the International Festival “Intermuseum 2010” “For the variety of scientific and publishing activities”.
2011 – The museum staff was given the Letter of Acknowledgment of the RF Minister for the high ranks in restoration and preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of Russia.
The museum became the winner of the contest “Preservation as Art” (with the project “Wireless Control Systems of Temperature and Humidity Conditions in the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral of the Ferapontov Monastery”) at the International Festival “Intermuseum 2011”.
2013 - Mikhail Sharomazov was awarded a diploma and a medal for his personal important contribution to the cooperation of the Russian Federation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in the sphere of cultural heritage preservation by the Commission of the RF for UNESCO.
2014 – The museum staff was given the Letter of Acknowledgment of the Vologda Oblast Governor for the important contribution to the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of Russia. The museum was also awarded the Honorary Certificate of the Department of Culture in the Vologda region for the important contribution to the development of museums affairs in the Vologda region, the Honorary Certificate of the Ministry of Culture of the RF for the important contribution to the development of culture.
