The competition “Changing Museum in a Changing World” has been held by the Vladimir Potanin Charitable Fund with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and with the operative administration of the Association of Cultural Managers (ACM) since 2003. Its goal is adaptation of Russian museums to the changing conditions of the modern world, support and promotion of the best examples of museum practice. The contest consists of two stages. According to the results of the first round, the jury basing on the experts’ opinion chooses the projects that advance to the semi-final. Their authors are invited to a project and educational seminar. During the training, the designers communicate with each other and with leading museum specialists. As a result, they improve their applications till the level of business plans and send them to the jury again. At the second stage, the award panel finally determines the winners and makes a decision concerning the amount of financing of each of them.
The contest supports the most interesting museum projects from all over Russia every year. Its total grant fund in 2013-2014 makes up 20 million roubles. One of the main priorities of the competition is creation of equal conditions for all museums and museum organizations regardless of their status and location. Departmental museums that are open to the public have first taken part in the contest this year.
