History of the region based on the materials of archeological excavations” is being opened on the lowest floor of the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple with the refectory. It is the first full exhibition representing archaeology of the Belozersk district in the Vologda Region. Materials of the monastery archeology are displayed for the first time in our region. More than 4000 archeological objects dating back to different chronological periods are represented there: from the Mesolithic period (9000 B.C.) till the late Middle Ages.
At the end of the 20th – early 21st century considerable restoration work has been carried out in the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. Museumfication of the monuments is being realized at the same time. One of the most interesting architectural buildings of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery is the Monks’ cells. In the process of its restoration architects and restorers managed to discover complicated structure of this dwelling house of the 17th-19th centuries.
Exhibitions dedicated to the folk applied art and handicrafts of the Belozersk district are placed in the spacious vaulted chambers of the monastery cook-house of the 16th century. An important place is occupied by wood-carving, ceramics, peasant embroidery, weaving, lace-making and a folk female costume of the 19th-early 20th centuries.

Restoration is being carried out in the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. Specialists are working on several monuments. The main one among them is the Dormition Cathedral where His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia is due to conduct the liturgy on October 20.

They have already completed strengthening of gilding and carving of the iconostasis in the Dormition Cathedral, have placed copies of icons and the Royal Doors and have restored the church chandelier. It is planned to solve the problem of lighting in the cathedral in August and September. Means for restoration of the fronts of the Dormition Cathedral, the Churches of St. Vladimir, St. Kirill Belozersky and St. Epiphanius of Cyprus will be allocated in accordance with the federal special-purpose program “Culture of Russia”. The lower part of the Bell-tower and the walls of the central alley are also being renovated.

Work in the Church of St. Martinian began in the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes: floors will be renovated and walls will be whitewashed there. Besides, they will replace windows in the drum, restore the central part of the iconostasis and the church front.

Not only the visit of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church influenced the terms of the restoration: a lot that would be done was planned beforehand. It is connected with one more important event.

“Next year the museum will celebrate the 90th anniversary of its opening. This work will give us a chance to have a different look in the next five years and to present the museum during the festive days”, said Mikhail Sharomazov, director of the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve.
