History of the region based on the materials of archeological excavations” is being opened on the lowest floor of the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple with the refectory. It is the first full exhibition representing archaeology of the Belozersk district in the Vologda Region. Materials of the monastery archeology are displayed for the first time in our region. More than 4000 archeological objects dating back to different chronological periods are represented there: from the Mesolithic period (9000 B.C.) till the late Middle Ages.

At the end of the 20th – early 21st century considerable restoration work has been carried out in the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. Museumfication of the monuments is being realized at the same time. One of the most interesting architectural buildings of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery is the Monks’ cells. In the process of its restoration architects and restorers managed to discover complicated structure of this dwelling house of the 17th-19th centuries.

Folk art of the Belozersk district

Exhibitions dedicated to the folk applied art and handicrafts of the Belozersk district are placed in the spacious vaulted chambers of the monastery cook-house of the 16th century. An important place is occupied by wood-carving, ceramics, peasant embroidery, weaving, lace-making and a folk female costume of the 19th-early 20th centuries.

Visitors of Kirill Durandin’s exhibition – about the idea to erect monument to Dionisy

The exhibition of sculptor Kirill Durandin (St. Petersburg) is open in the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes. It is housed in the parvis of the Refectory, in the historical interior of 1530. The author displayed works made at the beginning of his creative activity, indoor sculpture and a model of the monument to Dionisy with several reliefs for the pedestal.

The museum employees, local residents and tourists attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition. They got interested in the idea of setting up the monument to the medieval painter in the Ferapontovo village. Various points of view were expressed: somebody supported the idea, the others (mainly, the professional association) had doubts about the monument and the location of it. The Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes organized the voting to answer the following question: “Is it necessary to set up the monument to Dionisy in Ferapontovo? The matter concerns not the specific sculpture, but a possibility of such a monument in general. This question is not accidental because in the opinion of many people, the best monument to the Master is his creation – the frescoes in the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral.

Everybody who wants can vote in the exhibition hall itself and express an opinion in the guestbook till June 26. These are some of the opinions:

“Yes, the monument to such a great person should be erected. Nastya”. “It is absolutely necessary to set it up; we need it for our future. 15.06.2013”

“Of course! The monument is necessary! And it is better to erect it on the shore of the lake, at the entrance to the monastery. Abasheva L.M. 18.06.2013”.

“If work on this (monument) is continued in future, it would be wonderful to take into account historical truth. St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin, Alexandra”.

“On the grave of the architect of the St. Paul’s Cathedral in London (he was buried in the church), one can read the following words: “If you seek his monument, look around you”. What the Master has created is the best monument. Novikov V.A. 19.06.2013”.
