History of the region based on the materials of archeological excavations” is being opened on the lowest floor of the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple with the refectory. It is the first full exhibition representing archaeology of the Belozersk district in the Vologda Region. Materials of the monastery archeology are displayed for the first time in our region. More than 4000 archeological objects dating back to different chronological periods are represented there: from the Mesolithic period (9000 B.C.) till the late Middle Ages.
At the end of the 20th – early 21st century considerable restoration work has been carried out in the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. Museumfication of the monuments is being realized at the same time. One of the most interesting architectural buildings of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery is the Monks’ cells. In the process of its restoration architects and restorers managed to discover complicated structure of this dwelling house of the 17th-19th centuries.
Exhibitions dedicated to the folk applied art and handicrafts of the Belozersk district are placed in the spacious vaulted chambers of the monastery cook-house of the 16th century. An important place is occupied by wood-carving, ceramics, peasant embroidery, weaving, lace-making and a folk female costume of the 19th-early 20th centuries.

The project “Museums of the Kirillov district” started in November 2012. Local residents united into teams and became its participants. They visited different museums of the district within several months. Thematic tours and interactive lessons were conducted for them there.

In all, eight teams took part in the project: “Time Machine” and “Beloozero” (both consisted of pupils of the Goritsy school), the public association “Volunteer”, “Family” (the Mokievskys), the youth centre “Alfa”, “Sun” (the Yerofeevs), “Energy Workers” (employees of the Kirillov Electrical Networks), “New Generation” (pupils of the Kirillov school). Every team had its own itinerary of the tour of the district museums.

Yevgeny Kivelev, employee of the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes, elaborated this project and supervised its implementation. Its goals were to pay attention of local people to the museums of both the federal and the municipal level, and to attract visitors.

The participants of the project went to see the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes, the Museum of Town and District History, the Museum of Kirillov Accordion and the Museum of Hero of the Soviet Union Yevgeny Preobrazhensky in the Volokoslavinskoe settlement, the House of Bread and the Picture Gallery in the Talitsy settlement, and a small museum in the village Sukhoverkhovo. Specialists of the National Park “Russian North” joined in the project as well. Everything which the travelers saw and heard was written down in the register called “Chronicles of Tour”. They even described the weather on those days when they visited the museums. The final of the project was scheduled for May.

Its results were summed up in the conference hall of the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve yesterday. Only one team – the Mokievskys - didn’t reach the final for good reasons. The jury that estimated the participants included employees of all museums involved in the project. It was headed by I.A. Smirnov, deputy director of the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. Before the winner was announced, all teams gave small presentations about their tours. As for the pupils of the Kirillov school, they even prepared a sketch and reported about their trip in verse.

A lot was told about the project itself on that day – its idea and implementation. The participants were unanimous that this event was certainly interesting and useful. They thanked the organizers and expressed their hope for its continuation in autumn 2013.

They also made their proposals. For example, T.N. Gurina, teacher of the Goritsy school, suggested cancelling marks to exclude the competition – the teams were too different, especially regarding the age of their members.

An award ceremony was held after the tea party prepared for all participants of the event. Four teams were named the winners of the project: “Sun”, “Time Machine”, “Energy Workers” and “New Generation”. They received a gift certificate: they would be able to go to Vologda and back at the expense of the organizers. So now the teams are to choose one more place of their itinerary and to decide what they want to see in Vologda. The other participants were given diplomas and souvenirs.

As both the organizers and the participants are satisfied with the result of their joint work, the project “Museums of the Kirillov district” will be probably continued this autumn.
