A meeting of the initiative council on memorialization of Prince Mikhail Ivanovich Vorotynsky, foremost military leader and statesman of the second half of the 16th century, was held in the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve on December 6. V.A. Sablin, dean of the History Department in Vologda State Teachers’ Training University, Doctor of Historical Sciences; V.P. Kuznechenkov, initiator of the council establishment; Y.A. Sinitsyna, leading specialist of the Museum Work Administration in the Culture Department of the Vologda region; I.A. Smirnov, deputy director of the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve, participated in it.
Members of the initiative council discussed a number of issues concerning results of the researches carried out in the course of archeological digs in the Dormition Cathedral and plans of memorialization of M.I. Vorotynsky, visited the church of St. Vladimir – the burial place of the Vorotynskys. Besides, they made an application to the Town Administration to name one of the new streets on Kirillov after Mikhail Ivanovich Vorotynsky.
Under Ivan the Terrible, Prince Vorotynsky became famous for his feats of arms, participating in almost all large campaigns against the Crimea, Lithuania, and Turkey. But in 1573, he was suspected of conspiracy, arrested and exiled to the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery. The prince died en route to the monastery and was buried in the church of St. Vladimir at the Dormition Cathedral.
It was already the second meeting of the council. During the first one, which took place in Vologda on November 30, 2012, they approved a plan of events aimed at the memorialization of Prince Mikhail Ivanovich Vorotynsky.
