History of the region based on the materials of archeological excavations” is being opened on the lowest floor of the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple with the refectory. It is the first full exhibition representing archaeology of the Belozersk district in the Vologda Region. Materials of the monastery archeology are displayed for the first time in our region. More than 4000 archeological objects dating back to different chronological periods are represented there: from the Mesolithic period (9000 B.C.) till the late Middle Ages.

At the end of the 20th – early 21st century considerable restoration work has been carried out in the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. Museumfication of the monuments is being realized at the same time. One of the most interesting architectural buildings of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery is the Monks’ cells. In the process of its restoration architects and restorers managed to discover complicated structure of this dwelling house of the 17th-19th centuries.

Folk art of the Belozersk district

Exhibitions dedicated to the folk applied art and handicrafts of the Belozersk district are placed in the spacious vaulted chambers of the monastery cook-house of the 16th century. An important place is occupied by wood-carving, ceramics, peasant embroidery, weaving, lace-making and a folk female costume of the 19th-early 20th centuries.

People of the district go to the museum tour.

The period from the end of October till the beginning of May is considered as a low season. But it doesn’t mean that the museum is closed when the last ship pulls off from the bank. It becomes quiet in the town. But local people have a good chance to visit museums because the museum workload decreases by times during a low season and the museum employees can find time for the inhabitants of Kirillov.

Our residents know little about our native land. They seldom visit museums. But there are many museums in the Kirillov district and each of them keeps much interesting information. In order to change this situation the project called “Museums of the Kirillov district” was started in November. The participants of it are the inhabitants of the town Kirillov and of the Kirillov district, pupils and adults.

- Excursions are the main work and the main service of museums. In order to attract more visitors to the museums of the district during a low season a new interactive form of activities was worked out, - the author of the project, Evgeny Kivelev, says, - our employees offer new interactive excursions, museum lessons, master classes that will help to know more information about a native land.

Now 8 teams participate in the project: 2 teams are from the Goritsy school (pupils of the 5^th and 8^th classes), 2 teams of the youth center “Alfa”, 2 families (Mokievskie and Erofeevy), a team of the employees of “Kirillov Electrical Networks” and pupils of the Kirillov school (6^th, 8^th,9^th classes).The students of the Vologda Cultural College will take part in the project. Each team has its own itinerary of tour to the museums of the district. The participants will visit the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, the Museum of Dionysius’ Frescoes, the Museum of History of Town and District, the Museum of Russian Accordion and the Museum in honour of E.N. Preobragensky, Hero of the Soviet Union in the settlement Volokoslavinskoe, the House of Bread and the Picture Gallery in the settlement Talitsy and a small museum in the village Sukhoverkhovo. The specialists of the National Park “Russian North” have got involved in the project.

Description of every day is written to the register called “Chronicles of Tour”. The captain of team writes not only the main events and impressions, but also a date, a location, weather conditions, etc. One can stick photos and draw pictures.

The results of the project will be determined in May.
